I Want To Help

Sam is in desperate need of a kidney and a live donor is her best chance of having a great outcome.

The process to become a donor is complicated, but very rewarding.

The First Step is to call the Hartford Hospital Living Kidney Transplant Coordinator,
Coleen Smart at 860-972-4219.
She will do an initial screening over the phone and provide you with a detailed package of information to apply and learn more about becoming a donor.

FAQ’s

Am I qualified to be a kidney donor?
Kidney donors must be at least 20 years old. They need to be in good to excellent physical and mental condition, which will all be determined by an extensive screening process.

What does it cost me?
All of the medical costs are covered by Sam’s insurance. If you are from out-of-state, you will be provided Room, Board and Transportation expenses as well.

How long is the surgery?
The surgery itself is 3-4 hours.

How long is recovery?
Recovery time varies from person to person. Most people are out of the hospital in a week or less. You will be kept as comfortable as possible with medication during your recovery.

Can someone come with me?
Yes. One support person is allowed to come with you and their Room/Board will be covered as well.

What after-care will I be provided?
As with any surgery, there will be post-op visits. All visits will be covered by Sam’s insurance.

What are the long-term risks?
Being a kidney donor does not interfere with you life, past the initial surgery. It does not shorten your life or increase the change of getting kidney disease yourself.

I’m not eligible as an organ donor, but can I still help?
Absolutely! Thank you for even considering helping Sam. We are accepting monetary donations, to cover non-insured expenses. Simply send a check to:

TD BANK, SAMANTHA JEAN HALL, #8891
or
Heather Ellis, PO Box 163, Winchester, CT 06094.

We appreciate everyone who is taking the time to read this. If you are thinking about becoming a donor, please contact the Living Transplant Coordinator at Hartford Hospital.

      • Hi Kathryn, there is no problem, Coleen had said there has been a huge response for Sam so it is taking a while to get back to people. She did say they have 4-5 people now that look good as a match. Please be patient, she will get back to you.

        Thank you

  3. Heather, Kris has been telling me about Sam, what a very nice girl she is, about her interests in art, animals, crafts, etc. and about her illness. She sounds like a very remarkable child. I just received news of this website from your Mom thru a Christmas card, and I’ve shared it on facebook, asking a dear friend who is especially adept (and kind and compassionate as well) in getting the “word” out, to help me reach as many people as possible. I’ve “shared” this with all of MY fb ‘friends’ and they will share it with theirs as well. I wish I could do more (I’m “medically excluded” as a donor, but would if I could). Please know we’re thinking of you and of Sam and have you in our hearts.

I’m continuing to share this with more and more people, as it’s ever present on my mind and as names of more friends and relatives pop into my head, I go to my computer and share this. You did a beautiful job setting up this website and I know anyone reading about Sam will be greatly moved by her story. Sending all positive thoughts your way, and we’ll keep them coming.

    • Hi Lynn, yes you would be able to help if you are a match. Call Coleen’s number on the website and she can direct you to your nearest facility to be tested for blood type and she will also email the paper work. Thank you so much.

  4. I really hope they find a match for her! This may be an odd question but I was wondering……Has there ever been any type of program where maybe inmates can volunteer to donate their organs as long as they meet the criteria? Something tells me there are some very remorseful people that are incarerated and would probably be more than willing to give something back. Just a thought. My prayers go out to Sam and her family. :)

  9. Heather, I am trying to reach you. Have quickly spoken with your ex, have left two messages for Colleen and I don’t have a phone or e-mail for you. My company wishes to coordinate a gala dinner fundraiser event at our community clubhouse, just across the Torrington border in Litchfield. I have a draft of the proposed event poster, concept but need to meet or speak with you as soon as possible. We are proposing an elegant dinner, pre dinner reception, and ticket prices around $100. All proceeds of course to the bank fund account. I have a meeting with my corporate partners this afternoon so the sooner I hear back from you the better. Thank you.

  13. I am a blood donor, I just gave double red cells yesterday. WHEN Sammy gets her transplant I would love to donate to her or her donor directly to help save on costs. I believe I can do a directed donation, I would just need to know somewhat in advance as I have to go 110 days between double red donations. I am O+. If you are interested in this I will stop doing double red and go back to regular donations (every 56 days) until her transplant so that I’ll be eligible to give to her and/or donor.

    • Yes Courtney, a person only needs one kidney to function fully. Both of Sam’s kidneys have failed therefore she is in need of one to survive.
